Built-In Security Features
Before diving into best practices, it helps to know what Netspend already has working for you:Zero Liability Protection
You are not responsible for unauthorized transactions when reported promptly. Netspend’s zero liability policy protects your balance if your card is used without your permission.
Anytime Alerts
Receive real-time text or email alerts for every transaction on your card, so you know the moment your card is used — even for the smallest purchase.
PIN Protection
Your 4-digit PIN is required for ATM withdrawals and PIN-based debit transactions, adding a layer of protection even if someone else has your physical card.
Account Monitoring
Review your full transaction history anytime via the Netspend mobile app or at netspend.com, making it easy to spot anything unusual.
Essential Security Practices
These are the steps every Netspend cardholder should take to stay protected:1
Enable transaction alerts immediately
Go to your account settings on the Netspend app or at netspend.com and turn on real-time text and email alerts. You’ll be notified the moment your card is used — giving you the fastest possible heads-up if a charge wasn’t made by you.
2
Choose a strong PIN
Avoid obvious PINs like 1234, your birth year, or repeated digits (e.g., 1111). Choose something random and memorable only to you. Never share your PIN with anyone, including people claiming to be Netspend representatives.
3
Protect your card number
Never share your full card number, CVV (the 3-digit code on the back), or expiration date via email, text, or phone — unless you initiated the contact and you’re certain who you’re speaking with. Legitimate companies will not ask for this information unprompted.
4
Use secure networks
Avoid accessing your Netspend account on public Wi-Fi networks (like those at coffee shops or airports). Use a VPN or switch to your mobile data connection when checking your balance or account details in public.
5
Lock your card if lost
If your card is lost or stolen, don’t wait — call 1-866-387-7363 immediately, any time of day or night, to block your card and request a replacement. Acting quickly limits your exposure.
6
Review statements regularly
Check your transaction history at least once a week for any charges you don’t recognize. The earlier you spot an unauthorized transaction, the faster you can dispute it and protect your balance.
Recognizing Netspend Scams
Scammers frequently target prepaid cardholders because cards can be hard to trace. Some of the most common scams targeting Netspend customers include fake “customer support” calls asking for card details, phishing emails with links to fake activation or login sites, and social media posts promising free card loads in exchange for personal information. Here’s what to watch for:Phishing Emails
Phishing Emails
Phishing emails are designed to look like official Netspend communications but are sent from fake addresses. Always check the sender’s email address carefully — official Netspend emails come from @netspend.com only. Look for misspellings, urgent language, or links to unfamiliar websites, and never enter your login credentials on a page you reached by clicking an email link.
Fake Reload Scams
Fake Reload Scams
In this scam, someone online or in person offers to “reload” your card with a larger amount if you first send them money or load your card and share the details. This is always a scam. Once your card information is shared, the scammer can drain your balance. Never pay anyone to load your prepaid card in exchange for a promised larger sum.
Prize and Lottery Scams
Prize and Lottery Scams
If you’re told you’ve won a prize, lottery, or sweepstakes and need to load money onto your Netspend card to claim it — stop. Legitimate companies and contests will never ask you to pay fees via a prepaid card to collect winnings. This is one of the most common prepaid card scam formats, and the money is almost impossible to recover once sent.
What to Do If Your Card Is Compromised
If you believe your card has been lost, stolen, or used without your permission, act quickly by following these steps:1
Call Netspend immediately at 1-866-387-7363
Netspend’s support line is available 24/7. Report that your card is lost, stolen, or that you’ve seen unauthorized activity on your account. Have your account information ready if possible.
2
Report all unauthorized transactions
Walk through your recent transaction history with the representative and clearly identify any charges you did not make. Prompt reporting is key to qualifying for zero liability protection.
3
Request a new card number
Ask for a replacement card with a new card number. Your existing balance will be transferred to the new card, and the old card number will be deactivated so it can no longer be used.
4
Update automatic payments
Once you receive your new card, update any subscriptions or recurring payments that were linked to your old card number, such as streaming services, utility autopay, or gym memberships.
5
File a police report if identity theft is suspected
If you believe your personal information (not just your card number) has been stolen, file a report with your local police department and consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file with the major credit bureaus.
