Direct deposit is one of the most popular features Netspend has to offer. Instead of waiting for a paper check or making a trip to reload your card, your paycheck, government benefits, or tax refund can be deposited directly to your Netspend card — often arriving 1–2 days before your scheduled pay date. Setting it up is straightforward and only needs to be done once.

What You’ll Need

Before you get started, make sure you have the following on hand:
  • An activated Netspend card
  • Your Netspend routing number
  • Your Netspend account number
  • Your employer’s direct deposit form (or access to their HR payroll portal)

How to Find Your Routing and Account Numbers

1

Log in to your account

Visit netspend.com or open the Netspend mobile app and sign in with your credentials.
2

Navigate to Direct Deposit settings

Go to Account Settings or look for the Direct Deposit section in the main menu.
3

Locate your numbers

Your 9-digit routing number and your account number will be displayed on the screen.
4

Save your information

Write these numbers down or take a screenshot to have them ready when you fill out your deposit form.
Netspend routing numbers may vary by card. Always retrieve your specific routing number directly from your account — do not use a generic Netspend routing number found online, as it may not be correct for your card.

Setting Up Direct Deposit with Your Employer

1

Get the direct deposit form

Obtain your employer’s direct deposit authorization form from your HR department or log in to your company’s payroll portal.
2

Fill in your Netspend details

Enter your full name, your Netspend routing number, and your Netspend account number on the form.
3

Select the account type

When prompted for account type, select Checking. Netspend accounts are treated as checking accounts for direct deposit purposes.
4

Submit the form

Return the completed form to your HR or payroll department. Submit it at least one full pay cycle before you want your first direct deposit to arrive.
5

Confirm processing

Follow up with HR or payroll to confirm your form has been received and processed before your next payday.

Setting Up for Government Benefits

The same process applies if you want to receive government payments directly to your Netspend card. Social Security, SSI, VA benefits, and other federal payments can all be routed to your card using your Netspend routing and account numbers. You can update your payment method through your respective benefit portal or by contacting the issuing agency directly. If you’re expecting a tax refund, the IRS also accepts prepaid debit card direct deposit — simply enter your Netspend routing and account numbers in the direct deposit section of Form 1040 when filing your return.

How Long Does It Take?

Your first direct deposit typically takes one full pay cycle — around 2–4 weeks — to activate after your authorization form is submitted and processed by payroll. Plan ahead and submit your form early so you don’t miss a cycle.
Once your direct deposit is established, funds typically arrive 1–2 days before your official payday, as Netspend processes deposits as soon as they are received from your employer.
If you directed your federal tax refund to your Netspend card, the IRS typically issues refunds within 8–21 days after your return is accepted, depending on how you filed and whether your return requires additional review.
Enrolling in direct deposit also makes you eligible for the early pay benefit — one of Netspend’s most popular features. The sooner you set it up, the sooner you can start getting paid ahead of schedule.
Once your card is activated, setting up direct deposit should be your next step. It’s the fastest way to fund your card on a regular basis, and it unlocks early pay and other account perks that make your Netspend card work harder for you. Reach out to your HR department today or log in to your benefit portal to get the process started.
